A horror-comedy for the ages that is also palpably in touch with its graver aspects, its anger and sadness, Jordan Peele’s striking debut has a sureness of purpose and argument that is awfully refreshing in an age of repugnant, “very fine people on both sides” equivocating. After a surprise announcement reversal, Moonlight won Best Picture, with Emma Stone from La La Land and Casey Affleck of Manchester By the Sea taking top acting honors. Luca Guadagnino’s blissfully languid, luxurious adaptation of André Aciman’s novel (the script is by James Ivory) marvelously invokes the blush and swoon of first love. That may be the future, but it’s infuriating that — like the villain in this movie — it can’t see past the bottom line. But these noble kids are, as they bicker and negotiate, inching a cause ever forward, determined and galvanized and righteous. And yet, it’s also cathartically bruising to watch the film’s title character hurl her disgust at a Trumpian billionaire when they wind up, through a mundane twist of fate, at the same nightmarish dinner party. What it finds in the planes of her face is some of the glamour of old-time movie stars — hints of Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Anna Magnani and Lauren Bacall — and even more of the emotional authenticity that made them stars in the first place. What a shame if the announcement gaffe is what people remember about its victory. Ms. Prince’s Moonee has earned a place in the canon of American mischief alongside the likes of Eloise and Tom Sawyer. A grim and despondent satire of black experience in supposedly benevolent white spaces, Get Out tells truths and wryly exposes injustices without any sort of accommodating gesture toward its white characters—nor to the white people in the audience. This rambling road documentary, directed by venerable 89-year-old French filmmaker Agnès Varda and hip young street artist JR, follows the unlikely pair as they travel around France putting up quick, temporary installations and talking with various French people about life and art. Somber and exciting, the film, directed by Matt Reeves, shows how large-scale action filmmaking can explore political and moral matters without bogging down in pretentiousness. And it gives cinematic shape to the intoxicating, elemental pull of adolescent lust in its perhaps most feverish bloom, vexing and thrilling and consuming in its intensity. The movie is painful because the truth is painful. I will happily watch it another dozen times until I find them all. Menu. Terence Davies’s blithely unconventional biopic glides through Dickinson’s life with poetic compression and musical grace, illuminating both her temperament and the austere, intellectually intense 19th-century New England environment that nurtured and constrained her gifts. Instead Campillo unflinchingly zooms in, showing the bitter indignities and all. From November through March, the best movies of 2017\/2018 are getting recognized by critics, press, fans, and members of the film industry from all over, in a number of award competitions. Re-watching it this year (upon its release in the U.S.), I was more captivated by the sharp, nervy sophistication of its oddball filmmaking. Andy Serkis remains the key to the enterprise. The film’s most piercingly telling, damning observation is that it’s the lone woman of color in the room, struggling against an implacable enemy, who’s the only one doing the trying. With peerless craft and technique, Mr. Nolan puts you in the air, on the sea and on the ground during a World War II rescue mission and, once the rescue is over, makes it harrowingly clear that the fight goes on. Read below to find out the winners! There may be some relief in seeing Beatriz go to bat for us, but, as the film argues, we all still may go down swinging in the end, toppling into the abyss. “Dunkirk” is about surviving. But it has a shivery resonance nonetheless; it’s a bracingly peculiar horror movie shrouding an understated grief drama. Instead, 2049 plays off of the themes, plot, and characters of the 1982 movie without cannibalizing it or negating or retroactively ruining any of those elements. Daniela Vega, who plays Marina, doesn’t show up on screen right away, but once she does (singing a torch song in a nightclub in Santiago, Chile), the camera never leaves her for long. Varda and JR are reliably wise and charming guides through their journey of French reflection. Thanks for voting! Instead, the film is insisting and clarifying, a hand held out in support, in mutual fear and awe and confusion. Ad Choices. Perhaps most rewardingly, B.P.M. 6. Ms. Varda is often described as one of the greatest female directors alive, which is true. All rights reserved. Copyright ©  2018 Fandango. “Dunkirk” is about surviving. It’s a huge relief to see that Villeneuve and his team are well aware of what the original film was about and show enormous respect for it. Rather, it organically expands and grows what came before. The kid-goes-to-college movie has emerged as a minor American genre. Raoul Peck’s documentary uses James Baldwin’s words to paint a portrait not only of the writer in his time, but also of the ideas that stretch beyond his work into our own troubled moment. Using its centered and committed lead actress, Kristen Stewart, as its chief investigator, Personal Shopper examines the potential for horror—both banal and gothic—lurking in everyday technology, in the ways we use it to both connect and detach. From IGN's Blade Runner 2049 Review: Perhaps one of the greatest fears fans had about a Blade Runner sequel was that it would simply replicate (ahem) the innovative and influential visual style Ridley Scott established in that film, while filling it with some kind of standard good-vs.-evil Hollywood cop tale. 11; or the excellent animated feature Your Name; or the wistful World War II drama Their Finest. The charges against them and the allegations leveled against other influential men in the entertainment industry and outside it are the cultural story of 2017. WINNER: The film primarily focuses on two young activists and lovers, played by Arnaud Valois and the brash, terrific Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. ‘WONDER WOMAN’ (Patty Jenkins) I love all the movies on my list, but more than any other this year, “Wonder Woman” reminded me that we bring our entire histories when we watch a movie — our childhood reveries, our adolescent yearnings and adult reservations. ‘PHANTOM THREAD’ (Paul Thomas Anderson) Two lives — and two perversities — become one in this ravishingly beautiful, often unexpectedly funny film, which traces the relationship between an eminent couture designer (a magnificent Daniel Day-Lewis) and his younger, surprising muse (Vicky Krieps). Jordan Peele wrote and directed the inescapable movie of 2017, a work of biting anti-consensus filmmaking that broke box office records. Either way, it’s good to see someone try. An even more welcome surprise is how the film’s women are given their due, with Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps proving a more than capable sparring partner for Day-Lewis’s bratty 1950s dress designer, and the great Lesley Manville commanding her scenes as his imperious, but not unkind, sister.
