Two helicopters collided midair near Hammonton Municipal Airport in Atlantic County, New Jersey, leaving one person dead and prompting a large-scale emergency response, according to initial reports.

The crash occurred close to the airport, with one helicopter coming down in the parking lot of a local fire station, narrowly missing parked vehicles. The second helicopter crashed into nearby wooded terrain.

Initial reports indicate that one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was in cardiac arrest, and had been pulled from burning wreckage as EMS workers prepared for air transport while providing lifesaving care.

First responders conducted an extensive search of the area to determine whether additional victims were involved, while establishing a landing zone for medical helicopters.

Authorities shut down portions of White Horse Pike and Route 206 as crews worked the scene.
