The NYPD reported Thursday that 78 individuals were arrested during a protest at Columbia University the day before. According to an NYPD spokesperson, two of those arrested were issued summonses to appear in court, though no further details on the charges have been released.
The protest intensified when anti-Israel demonstrators seized control of a reading room in Butler Library just days before final exams were scheduled. Protesters called for an “intifada” and defaced university property, prompting campus officials to request police intervention. The university said officers were called after protesters refused to identify themselves or leave, and as additional activists attempted to push past campus security to enter the building.
In response to the incident, Acting Columbia President Claire Shipman released a video statement expressing alarm over the protest’s impact. She described the library space as “defaced and damaged in disturbing ways and with disturbing slogans.”
“Violence and vandalism, hijacking a library — none of that has any place on our campus,” Shipman said. “Let me be clear: Columbia unequivocally rejects antisemitism and all other forms of harassment and discrimination.”
Shipman also confirmed that 900 students were forced to evacuate the library due to the disruption. Additionally, two campus safety officers were injured during the incident; one was transported on a gurney, while the other required bandaging.
Jewish students and faculty members praised the university’s handling of the situation, especially in contrast to the administration’s widely criticized response to previous demonstrations.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the protest via social media, stating, “We are reviewing the visa status of the trespassers and vandals who took over Columbia University’s library.”
“Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation,” Rubio posted on X.
