The political alliance between President Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of his most ardent allies, has spectacularly imploded, with the president on Saturday branding her a “RINO” and formally vowing to support a primary challenger against her.
In a scathing morning post from his social media platform, President Trump debuted a new nickname for the Georgia congresswoman, casting her as a traitor to his movement.
“Lightweight Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Brown (Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!), betrayed the entire Republican Party when she turned Left, performed poorly on the pathetic View, and became the RINO that we all know she always was,” the president wrote.
He continued, “Just another Fake politician, no different than Rand Paul Jr. (Thomas Massie), who got caught being a full fledged Republican In Name Only (RINO)! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The attack is the culmination of a feud that has been building for weeks.
On Friday, as he traveled to his Mar-a-Lago resort, the president confirmed he would back a primary challenge against Greene. “All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” Trump wrote, just three days after telling reporters that the congresswoman had “lost her way.”
The rift appears to have been exacerbated by Greene’s Nov. 4 appearance on “The View,” where the conservative firebrand surprised hosts with a conciliatory tone, calling for “women of maturity” to “sew [the country] back together.”
During the appearance, Greene broke with the president on several key policies, stunning co-host Sunny Hostin, who remarked, “You’ve gone so right, it’s like you’re on the left now.”
Most notably, Greene has escalated her criticism of the president’s “reluctance to release more documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case.” On “The View,” she forcefully called for the files to be made public, a position directly at odds with Trump, who has called interest in the case a “witch hunt.”
“It seems like very rich and powerful men are being protected,” Greene charged on the show. “And I will sign anybody’s resolution, and I’ll get on board with anyone’s wish to release those files.”
In addition to the Epstein files, Greene has publicly challenged the president’s “America First” credentials, arguing he is too focused on foreign policy.
Greene also opposed Trump’s endorsement of Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race, backing Republican Curtis Sliwa instead.
She has expressed opposition of the administration’s support of Israel and its campaign against alleged drug-smugglers off the coast of South America.
In addition, she has criticized her own party’s leadership, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, for failing to “fix” healthcare, and voiced support for extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies.
Greene has a history of antisemitism, having made reference to “Jewish space lasers” in one of her diatribes and other conspiracy theories about Jewish power in world affairs.
The break marks a stunning reversal for Greene, who has built her entire political brand on being one of President Trump’s most loyal and uncompromising defenders in Congress.
