The Manhattan district attorney announced Friday that 30-year-old Salem Seleiman has been given a two-year prison sentence for the 2021 assault on Jewish New Yorker Joey Borgen.
Borgen was ambushed in Times Square near an anti-Israel demonstration held during the 2021 conflict between Israel and Gaza terrorists. He had been on his way to a pro-Israel counter-rally when six men set upon him.
Footage of the attack, which showed the shocking level of violence, quickly turned the incident into a prominent hate-crime case in New York.
Seleiman, the final member of the group to face sentencing, admitted guilt in September to second-degree assault and third-degree assault as a hate crime.
“Salem Seleiman took part in the repugnant and bias-motivated assault of a Jewish man who was peacefully attending a rally,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says in a statement. “The victim was targeted based on his religion and did nothing to warrant physical violence.”
According to the statement, the attackers threw Borgen to the ground and beat him, using fists, kicks, pepper spray, and even a crutch, while shouting slurs including “filthy Jew” and “dirty Jew.”
Borgen made aliyah earlier this year.
Seleiman had previously fled New York, but authorities tracked him to Florida, where he was arrested in May and returned to New York City to face charges.
In New York City, Jews continue to be the most frequently targeted group in hate crimes.
