Rabbi Abraham Cooper, who recently engaged in talks with Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, said in a Sunday interview with Kan that a face-to-face meeting between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Sharaa could become a reality—if President Donald Trump takes the lead.

“I think the only way that would be a quick way is if someone named [US President] Donald Trump calls two people, the Israeli prime minister and the Syrian president, to come to Washington and sit for a few hours. That could change the picture,” Cooper said.

He added that Trump’s active involvement would be crucial in moving the process forward. “If Trump signals that he is going to stay involved and tell Sharaa, I am going to help rehabilitate your country, then anything is possible. Without that, it will go slowly, step by step,” said Cooper.

While acknowledging that Sharaa holds Islamist views, Cooper said the Syrian leader envisions a unified future for his nation. “It is correct that he is an Islamist,” Cooper remarked, “but Sharaa speaks about a future for his country that includes a united Syria with one army and equal rights. If he can do this, this will change the rules of the game.”

Recent developments suggest that Syria’s new leadership has not closed the door on the possibility of a normalization agreement with Israel.

Cooper has had a decades-long career in advocacy for awareness on antisemitism, leading the Simon Wisenthal center and other organizations.
