A federal appeals court on Monday cleared the Trump administration to send members of the Oregon National Guard to Portland, even as legal challenges over the deployment continue.
The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, in a split decision, overturned a lower court ruling that had barred the administration from mobilizing the troops. The Guard’s deployment is intended to protect federal immigration personnel and property in the city.
The decision comes amid ongoing disputes over federal authority and state objections to the use of military forces in domestic law enforcement operations.
