Tensions ran high among the families of Israeli hostages as the government delayed approval of the prisoner exchange deal due to disagreements with Hamas. Despite Qatar’s announcement of a breakthrough in negotiations between Israel and Hamas, the Israeli government had yet to approve the deal.
Yesterday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, thanking them for their assistance in advancing the hostage deal. Netanyahu and Trump also agreed to meet soon.
Senior Israeli officials later reported that last-minute disputes with Hamas had arisen over the evacuation of Israeli military forces from Gaza. However, Qatari mediators remained optimistic that the issues would be resolved, and the deal would move forward with the first batch of hostages to be released on Sunday.
In the last hour, Shas party Chairman Aryeh Deri and US officials confirmed that the hostage deal obstacles had been overcome, and the deal is expected to be signed soon. The Israeli government is expected to approve the deal tomorrow morning.
The possibility of withdrawing from the government has been discussed within the Religious Zionism party, which refuses to support the deal. A meeting was held earlier today at the Finance Ministry, where party members discussed the possibility of quitting the government.
Although some party members advocated for quitting, they ultimately set a condition: if Israel does not resume fighting in Gaza after the first 42-day phase of the deal, they will leave the government.
Likud Minister Amichai Shikli just announced that he would join Minister Smotrich in opposing the deal if Israel fails to defeat Hamas or withdraws from the Philadelphia Corridor in Gaza.
The implication is that the deal is expected to pass in the government despite opposition from the Religious Zionism and Otzma Yehudit parties. Many ministers, including the Charedi ministers from Shas and UTJ, have announced their support for the deal.
