President Trump’s security detail introduced a new piece of protective gear over the weekend: what appears to be a heavily armored golf cart, seen closely tailing him during a round at Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland — less than a year after an assassination attempt in Florida.
As Trump played at the course, a large, modified black vehicle followed nearby. Security experts believe it’s an armor-reinforced version of a Polaris Ranger XP, possibly modeled after Trump’s presidential limousine, nicknamed “The Beast.”
Trump himself drove a standard white golf cart, but the imposing new vehicle drew immediate attention on the green. “Just looking at the front windscreen, that looks armored,” said Gary Relf, director of Armoured Car Services, speaking to The Telegraph.
Relf explained that while exact modifications aren’t visible, the vehicle’s black banding and dark-tinted front glass suggest heavy fortification. “From those photos, that is 100% armored,” he said. “The windscreen is a giveaway, as are the side panels, doors and the large panel at the rear above the load tray.”
He added the design appears built for defense, not offense, and said the darkened windows likely indicate strong transparent armor. “The thicker the transparent armoring, the more tinted the window looks,” Relf noted.
The vehicle’s structure likely balances high security with a lightweight frame to avoid damaging the golf course, Relf said.
A Secret Service spokesman declined to confirm if the cart is part of official protection efforts, saying only that the agency does not comment on the “means and methods” used to safeguard the president.
The heightened measures follow two assassination attempts on Trump last year. In September, Ryan Routh, 59, aimed a Soviet-style semiautomatic rifle toward Trump at the Trump International Golf Club in Florida. He was spotted by agents while hiding in thick brush near the sixth hole, 400 yards from the president. After being fired upon, Routh fled but was caught during a traffic stop and charged with attempted assassination.
Two months earlier, Trump narrowly escaped death at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, fired from a rooftop just beyond the fairgrounds using an AR-style rifle, grazing Trump’s ear. The attack fatally wounded former firefighter Corey Comperatore and injured another audience member before Crooks was killed by a counter-sniper.
Police snipers were spotted on rooftops surrounding Trump during his Turnberry outing, underscoring the increased caution surrounding his public appearances.
