Avera Mengistu, who spent over ten years as a hostage in Gaza before being freed in February, has now been released from Ichilov Hospital following five months of medical care.
In a message shared with Israeli media, his sister Alemnesh praised her brother’s recovery, stating, “I am very proud of the path and the change he has been through since his return from captivity, with all the difficulties and ups and downs, he has been through a significant healing process.”
Mengistu’s family shared that he “is excited” about being discharged and is transitioning to a suitable long-term living arrangement. Mengistu, who had a documented mental health history, crossed into Gaza in 2014 and was held by Hamas until his release earlier this year as part of a broader ceasefire deal.
When Mengistu was released in February, his brother Ilan told the press that the road to full recovery would be long.
