Avner Netanyahu, son of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, was honored with an aliyah to the Torah during Shabbos in celebration of his upcoming marriage.
The event took place at the Beit knesset Hagadol (The Great Synagogue) in Yerushalayim, with no unusual incidents or left-wing protests occurring outside.
According to Israeli media reports, Yair Netanyahu, the Prime Minister’s older son, was called up as the ‘Levi,’ the Prime Minister himself received the ‘Acharon’ aliyah, and Avner was given maftir, as is customary for chasanim.
Netanyahu was present for all of Shacharis, according to reports.
The minhag among Ashkenazim is for chasanim to be called up to the Torah the Shabbos before their wedding; Avner’d wedding, however, is scheduled for a week and a half from now.
Following Shacharis, a large Kiddush was held, with attendance limited to guests who wore special bracelets, though the tefilos were open to the public.
