Outrage erupted after Tel Aviv Deputy Mayor Meital Lehavi attempted Wednesday to remove a tefillin stand set up in memory of victims of the October 7 attack.
Lehavi filmed herself at the site, stating, “We’ve had enough of unauthorized stands in public spaces.”
Her actions provoked strong criticism, particularly from bereaved families, including those of Osher and Micha’el Vaknin. Their mother, Rachel, shared her anguish with Walla News:
“My heart sank with a terrible feeling. Why was this stand a problem? I cried for so long. It was simply a memorial for my murdered children. Why such hatred?”
She added: “I see their pictures on the stand, and it brings me comfort. I’m alone now. Their friends try to keep it going, but I don’t know what will happen.”
Following the backlash, Lehavi deleted her post and issued an apology—not for disrespecting the tefillin stand, but for failing to recognize its memorial significance. While apologizing, she doubled down: “Today, it’s a tefillin stand; tomorrow, it could be something else.”
