The BBC is examining claims of a second instance in which remarks by US President Donald Trump were edited in a deceptive manner.
Earlier this week, the broadcaster apologized for a documentary aired last October that made it seem as though Trump had directly called for “violent action” ahead of the 2021 Capitol assault carried out by his supporters.
Trump’s legal team has since sent a letter demanding the BBC “appropriately compensate” the president for the “harm caused” by the edit by Friday, or face a $1 billion lawsuit.
The fallout has already led to the resignations of the BBC’s director-general and its top news chief on Sunday.
According to The Telegraph, another questionable edit appeared in a June 2022 segment on the “Newsnight” program. That report stitched together separate lines from Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech — delivered the day of the riots — making it look as if he was urging supporters to head to the Capitol and “fight.”
A BBC spokesperson says: “This matter has been brought to our attention and we are now looking into it.”
The controversy lands at a sensitive moment for the BBC, which is preparing for negotiations over its Royal Charter governing structure, set to expire in 2027.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government have so far tried to balance support for the BBC’s independence with a deliberate effort to avoid appearing aligned against Trump.
