We are saddened to report the passing of one of the last survivors of the pre-war German ‘Yekkish’ community, Reb Yaakov Yisrael Zenger z”l; niftar at the age of 101.
Reb Yaakov Yisrael was described as impeccably honest, with unshakeable integrity, precision in Halacha, and adherence to the ancient minhagim of Ashkenaz.
Born in Germany before the darkness of the Holocaust descended, he absorbed the unique mesorah of Gedolei Ashkenaz. He later rebuilt his home in Manchester, England, serving as a living bridge to a world that was largely destroyed.
He was a fixture in the local shuls, known for his “Yekkish” punctuality; he was always one of the first to arrive. He established fixed times for Torah study that he never missed and distributed Tzedakah to the poor with great modesty, far from the public eye.
Family members relate that his extraordinary longevity, living to 101 with clarity of mind, was a fitting reward for hus legendary dedication to the Mitzvah of Kibbud Av V’Em; for which the Torah promises long life.
He was privileged to see five generations of upright, G-d-fearing descendants. He leaves behind a magnificent legacy of Torah, including his distinguished sons:
Harav Yom Tov Zenger, a Rosh Yeshiva Tzeirei Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak, and a renowned Posek, and Harav Yehuda Aryeh Zenger, one of the prominent leaders of the community in Manchester.
Reb Yaakov Yisrael is being flown to Eretz Yisrael for kevurah. The levaya will depart on Sunday morning at 10:00 AM from Shamgar in Yerushalayim, proceeding to Har HaMenuchos.
Yehi zichro baruch.
