At the annual Colel Chabad dinner Wednesday night, Hedge fund billionaire and philanthropist Bill Ackman presented a special award to Ahmed Al Ahmed, the Muslim Australian hero who risked his life to save Jews during the horrifying Bondi Beach Islamic terror attack in Australia last month.
At the event, community leaders gathered to support one of Israel’s oldest tzedaka organizations. But the highlight of the night was the tribute to Al Ahmed, whose selfless bravery during the Chanukah terror attack made headlines around the world.
Ackman, known for his stoic public persona, broke down in tears on stage as he described the sheer courage it took for Al Ahmed to charge into mortal danger. Al Ahmed, who was injured in the attack, wrestled a terrorist to the ground during the attack, effectively stopping the slaughter and saving countless Jewish lives from the attackers.
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” reported Crown Heights activist Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, who attended the event.
In a moment that stunned the audience, Al Ahmed was embraced on stage by Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, a senior Dayan in Sydney. Rabbi Ulman’s son-in-law, Rabbi Yitzchak Schlanger, was murdered at the Menorah lighting during the attack. Despite his personal tragedy, Rabbi Ulman spoke powerfully to the crowd, declaring that “darkness will not prevail.”
When asked about his heroism, Al Ahmed remained humble, telling the audience simply that “God led him to save lives.”
Rabbi Behrman, who met with Al Ahmed personally after the ceremony, described the event as “a powerful evening none of us will forget.”
“Let us in New York learn from his courage and heroism,” Behrman added, “and let his story inspire us to continue building those bridges.”
The dinner, hosted by Colel Chabad’s Director Rabbi Sholom Duchman, was hailed by attendees as an incredible tribute to true heroism and the enduring strength in the face of terror.
