The two dozen hostages still held by Hamas might be released “within a few weeks,” U.S. special envoy for hostage affairs Adam Boehler said Monday, following an interview the previous day which sparked outage in Israel.

Boehler said the direct sit-down he had with Hamas last week was a “helpful meeting,” and that he was confident that “what Hamas wants and would accept, and what Israel wants and would accept” could very well “come together” soon.

He added in the interview with CNN that such a a deal would include the delivery of the bodies of 35 hostages who were murdered by Hamas.

Asked how, as a Jewish-American, he felt about talking with a group comprised of “definitionally anti-Semitic murderers,” Boehler said It was “a little odd knowing what they really are,” but that his job as special envoy was to deal with anyone, good or bad, when necessary.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed Boehler’s meeting with Hamas Monday, saying that it was a “one off” and didn’t “bear any fruit.”
