A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot and killed a reportedly armed man early Saturday during a federal operation in south Minneapolis, according to Homeland Security officials.

The shooting, which left Minneapolis intensive care unit nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti dead, occurred near West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue as DHS officers were carrying out a targeted operation aimed at Jose Huerta-Chuma, an illegal alien with a criminal history that includes domestic assault, Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino said at a press conference.

Authorities said Pretty, 37, approached agents during the operation while armed with a nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun.

“The agents attempted to disarm the individual, but he violently resisted, fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots,” Bovino said. “Medics on the scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject, but the subject was pronounced dead at the scene.”

DHS later confirmed the man was carrying a firearm along with two additional magazines and had no identification. “This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement,” the agency said in a statement.

Bovino described the agent involved as “highly trained” with eight years of service and urged cooperation from state and local authorities to “get violent criminals off the street.” He also criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O’Hara for initially failing to disclose that the suspect was armed.

President Donald Trump weighed in on Truth Social, writing, “This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go – What is that all about? Where are the local Police?”

Following the shooting, DHS said roughly 200 agitators converged on the scene, obstructing and assaulting law enforcement, prompting crowd-control measures. Minneapolis police declared an unlawful assembly and urged residents to avoid the area, while officials confirmed two small fires were extinguished nearby.

Mayor Frey condemned the federal operation and called for it to end, saying, “How many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz echoed those calls, labeling the incident “sickening” and demanding federal agents leave the state.

Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith also criticized the operation, while Rep. Ilhan Omar described the shooting as “an execution by immigration enforcement.”

The Border Patrol Union defended the agents, warning that “irresponsible, hate-filled and false rhetoric” has fueled dangerous confrontations with officers carrying out lawful duties.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions following the Jan. 7 fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, which sparked nationwide protests and intensified scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement.
