A sudden spike in car thefts has put Borough Park residents on high alert, with nine vehicles stolen across the neighborhood in just one week.

Borough Park Shomrim tells Belaaz the thefts began with a single incident last Wednesday night but escalated rapidly, with five cars stolen in a single night earlier this week. The targeted vehicles were taken from various locations throughout the neighborhood, rather than one specific block.

Shomrim has already successfully tracked down and recovered three of the nine missing vehicles. The cars were located in the Bronx.

In response to the surge, Shomrim has implemented a new “tactical plan” and deployed significant additional resources.
“We’re out there all night,” the Shomrim representative said regarding the increased security measures.

While patrols were previously active until 3:30 a.m., volunteers are now extending their watch until 6:00 a.m. to intercept thieves who have been striking in the early morning hours.

Shomrim is urgently advising all vehicle owners to install third-party tracking devices to ensure their cars can be located if stolen.

However, the organization cautioned against relying solely on Apple AirTags. “AirTags are not the best,” the representative explained, noting that if a thief has an iPhone, they will receive a notification after about 15 minutes that they are being followed, allowing them to find and discard the device. Instead, residents are encouraged to use dedicated third-party tracking systems.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and to call the Shomrim hotline immediately if they observe any suspicious vehicles pulling over or idling in the area.
