The Pentagon announced Wednesday the appointment of Rear Admiral Brad Cooper as the next commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the military body responsible for American operations across the Middle East, including strategic coordination with Israel. Cooper will be promoted to the rank of admiral as part of the transition.

Cooper will succeed General Michael Kurilla, who has served as CENTCOM commander since 2022 and has been widely regarded as one of Israel’s strongest allies in the U.S. defense establishment. Over his tenure, Kurilla played a key role in tightening U.S.-Israel military cooperation and was a vocal advocate for taking a firm stance against Iran’s growing regional threats. His leadership earned him consistent praise from Israeli defense officials.

A seasoned naval officer, Cooper previously led the U.S. Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain.

Cooper has visited Israel numerous times and is well acquainted with top IDF leadership, making him a trusted figure in Jerusalem. His past naval experience and ongoing role within CENTCOM have made him a key player in shaping operational strategy and regional cooperation efforts.
