A military helicopter and a small commercial plane collided Wednesday night in Washington D.C., as rescue workers are racing against the clock to recover possible survivors.
The chopper, a Black Hawk helicopter, crashed mid-air at around 9 P.M. into an American Airlines plane, flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, that was landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The number of occupants is not known at this time, but FAA officials said that the plane had a capacity of 60 passengers and had four crew members aboard during the flight. Three U.S. soldiers were aboard the helicopter, according to a U.S. defense official who spoke with CNN. Their fate is unknown at this time.
According to reports, 19 bodies were pulled from the water so far. There’s no word of survivors yet, according to an emergency official.
After the crash, the aircrafts fell into the Potomac River, according to DC Fire and EMS.
All flights to and from the airport have been halted to accomodate the multiple rescue agencies actively searching for victims.
The circumstances of the crash are unclear.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation, and released a statement at around 11 P.M., which read as follows: “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May G-d Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”
