Two National Guard members were fatally shot Wednesday afternoon near the Farragut West Metro station in downtown Washington, D.C., approximately one mile from the White House.

The White House was briefly placed on lockdown, and President Trump has been briefed. The suspect is in custody, and the scene has since been secured by Washington, D.C. Police.

President Trump issued a statement shortly after the shooting: “The individual responsible for the attack on the two National Guardsmen, resulting in their deaths, is also severely wounded. Nevertheless, they will face severe consequences. God bless our esteemed National Guard, along with all our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly remarkable individuals. As President of the United States, and on behalf of everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, I stand with you!”

Following the incident, White House Press Secretary stated: “The White House is fully aware and closely monitoring this heartbreaking event. The President has received a briefing.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X: “Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C.. The DHS is collaborating with local law enforcement to gather more information.”
