Emily Damari, a British-Israeli woman who survived 471 days in Hamas captivity, issued a blistering condemnation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his announcement that the UK will recognize a Palestinian state in September.
In a post on Instagram, Damari wrote: “Starmer is not on the right side of history. If he had been in power during World War II, would he have worked to recognize the Nazi occupation of countries like the Netherlands, France, or Poland? That’s not diplomacy — it’s a moral failure. Shame on you.”
Damari added that as a British citizen who personally endured Hamas captivity, she is devastated by the move. “This will not advance peace; it could reward terrorism. It sends a dangerous message: violence leads to legitimacy,” she wrote. “By recognizing a Palestinian state while Hamas still controls Gaza and continues its terror campaign, Starmer is not moving toward a solution — he is prolonging the conflict. Recognizing under these conditions empowers extremists and destroys any hope for real peace. Shame on you.”
Starmer declared on Tuesday that unless Israel takes “real steps” to change the situation in Gaza, the UK will formally recognize a Palestinian state before the upcoming UN General Assembly.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the UK will “evaluate Israel’s actions before the General Assembly” and then decide whether to proceed with recognition. Starmer said the goal is to “preserve the viability of a two-state solution.”
He also stressed that Britain’s support for Israel’s security remains firm. “Our message to Hamas has not changed: they must release all hostages immediately, agree to a ceasefire, disarm, and accept that they will have no role in a future government in Gaza,” he said.
According to a report in Maariv, research by the Jerusalem Center for Applied Policy indicates that Hussam Zomlot, the Palestinian Authority’s ambassador to the UK, is a key figure behind the scenes influencing this diplomatic move. Since his appointment in 2018, Zomlot, originally from Rafah, has run an aggressive campaign to portray Israel as an “apartheid” state and has worked to build political pressure for British recognition of Palestinian statehood.
Zomlot’s approach has combined sharp rhetoric, media messaging, and extensive lobbying efforts within the UK Parliament to promote his agenda.
