British Royal Air Force Shadow R1 aircraft have been conducting surveillance flights over Gaza to help Israel locate hostages, senior UK officials confirmed to The Times.

Equipped with advanced electro-optical and electronic sensors, these planes have flown hundreds of missions from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus until last month. The technology enables precise monitoring of vehicles, streets, and apartment blocks.

The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed ongoing reconnaissance flights, though the Shadow R1 aircraft have returned to the UK, with other aircraft likely continuing the mission.

In a statement, the UK Ministry of Defense stated that the flights are “solely intended to support efforts to locate hostages held in Gaza.”

This comes as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pressures Israel to halt fighting in Gaza, threatening to recognize a Palestinian state by September.
