A Sydney court on Monday released disturbing footage and documents revealing the extensive preparation behind the December 14 terror attack that claimed the lives of 15 people. The evidence details how the perpetrators, a father and son, spent months training with firearms and explosives before targeting Jewish families celebrating Chanukah in the name of radical Islam.

The court documents include recordings and images of Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, practicing in an open rural area. The footage shows the pair firing shotguns and “moving tactically,” a clear indication of what investigators describe as careful planning over many months.

According to the court proceedings, the attack could have been even more devastating. Moments before opening fire on the crowd, the two suspects threw four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at attendees. Fortunately, none of the devices detonated. A fifth suspected bomb was later discovered by police in the trunk of the vehicle they used to drive to the scene.

New South Wales Police also released images showing the terrorists’ movements in the days leading up to the massacre. The two were filmed visiting Bondi Beach just two days before the attack and were captured on surveillance leaving a rented apartment in the area on the morning of the mass shooting.

Evidence presented in court suggests a motive rooted in violent extremism. The pair reportedly filmed videos expressing a radical religious ideology, including one recorded in front of an ISIS flag. In the footage, they explicitly stated they “condemn the actions of the Zionists,” using this rhetoric as their justification for the targeted violence against the Jewish community.

The December 14 shooting remains one of the darkest days for the Sydney community.
Sajid Akram, the primary gunman, was shot dead by police at the scene.
Naveed Akram was arrested and is currently facing 15 counts of murder with a terrorism charge, and 40 counts of attempted murder

The release of these documents comes as the community continues to mourn the 15 kedoshim and process the sheer evil, antisemitic attack.
