Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo concedes Democrat Primary for Mayor of NYC to Socialist Jihadi candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Cuomo called to congratulate Mamdani, Politico reports.
As polls closed at 9 PM EDT on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, over 930,000 New Yorkers had cast their ballots, defying a sweltering heat wave that saw temperatures reach 100 degrees.
Mamdani received approximately 43.1% of the votes. Trailing him is former Governor Andrew Cuomo at 34.5%, with City Comptroller Brad Lander in third at 12.9%.
Cuomo’s concession obviated the need for ranked choice voting.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old self-described Democratic socialist, has expressed sympathy for Hamas terrorists and has called for a full cut to aid to Israel. He’s received endorsements from national progressive figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders.
Meanwhile, Andrew Cuomo, despite consistently leading in pre-election polls since entering the race in March, performed lower in more recent polls.
Current Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking re-election as an independent in the November general election, offered a pointed assessment of his Democratic challengers, stating, “One person doesn’t have a record, one person is running from their record, and I have a record.”
Voter turnout for this primary is estimated to reach around 1.1 million, a noticeable increase from the 2021 mayoral primary, signaling heightened engagement despite the challenging weather conditions.
