FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced Wednesday that he will be leaving his post next month, confirming speculation that had circulated earlier this week about his future at the bureau.
“I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January,” Bongino wrote in a post on X Wednesday. “I want to thank President Trump, AG Bondi, and Director Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose. Most importantly, I want to thank you, my fellow Americans, for the privilege to serve you. God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”
President Donald Trump alluded to Bongino’s departure earlier Wednesday while speaking on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, suggesting the move was voluntary and tied to Bongino’s media career. “Dan did a great job. I think he wants to go back to his show,” Trump said.
Bongino, who previously served as a U.S. Secret Service agent, entered the FBI’s second-highest leadership role without prior experience at the bureau. According to the FBI Agents Association, the deputy director position had been filled exclusively by career FBI personnel for more than a century before his appointment. The role does not require Senate confirmation.
As of now, no announcement has been made regarding who will succeed Bongino as deputy director.
