East Village Block Taken Over by Migrants, Used as Ebike Lot

An East Village street has been taken over and turned into a parking hub for delivery e-bikes, with a security guard posted overnight to keep watch, according to local residents who spoke with the New York Post.

Neighbors appeared mostly unfazed by the increasing number of e-bikes and scooters now lined up along 11th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A.

“It’s not great to look at, but I understand that they need to make a living,” a local resident, David L., told the Post during a recent visit to the block.

What began with just a handful of bikes quickly ballooned into dozens, said one neighbor who has lived on the street for two years.

“It started with 4-5 bikes at any given time. Then overnight it became like 50,” he recounted.

Another resident described the sudden growth as startling. “I was shocked. It was like somebody put out the word and everyone swarmed.”

On Wednesday, reporters from the Post counted approximately 50 e-bikes parked along both sides of the street and sidewalk, many equipped with food delivery storage bags.

The ad-hoc lot is located about 200 feet from the East Side Community School, which educates students in grades 6 through 12. The Lower East Side Playground is also nearby, though the cluster of bikes doesn’t seem to bother most locals.
