Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu suggested that Hamas terrorists may release American-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander this week as a goodwill gesture to US President Donald Trump, who is expected to visit the region soon, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke with Axios on Sunday.
Sources indicate that the Trump administration is putting significant diplomatic pressure behind the scenes in an effort to secure a breakthrough in the ongoing negotiations surrounding Gaza, hoping to align progress with Trump’s high-profile visit.
Israel has reportedly marked the conclusion of Trump’s upcoming trip as a critical deadline for reaching a new agreement involving hostages and a ceasefire. Officials are warning of a full-scale military operation in Gaza should negotiations fail to deliver results.
White House Modeast envor Steve Witkoff is currently in Oman, where he engaged in talks with Iranian officials on Sunday. Witkoff is also coordinating with officials from Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and representatives from Hamas, focusing on a potential agreement for Gaza and broader regional peace efforts, two sources briefed on the discussions said.
“These are very crucial days,” Netanyahu reportedly stated during a closed-door meeting of the Knesset Foreign Relations and Security Committee on Sunday, according to sources present at the hearing.
