Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Yuli Edelstein has chosen not to bring the draft enlistment bill to a vote, effectively shelving it, according to a report by Kan News.

The report notes that Edelstein made the decision after concluding that the bill stood no chance of passing, particularly now that the Charedi factions have withdrawn their support from the government coalition.

Degel Hatorah MK Rabbi Yitzchak Pindrus told Belaaz that Edelstein “fooled us” and is trying to get credit now for freezing a law that never should have been made.

“Excellent, he froze an irrelevant law; ‘You murdered (your parent) and now you want your inheritance,'” he said.

“Let him bring a normal law and then freeze it at most. The problem is that he didn’t bring a law at all. He froze it a year and a half ago, not now. He managed to avoid having a law for a year and a half. He fooled us.”

In recent days, Edelstein pushed back against claims that he was using the enlistment issue to undermine the coalition rather than work toward a legislative solution.

“I want, wanted, and will continue to want one thing – to bring a real enlistment law. Maybe not perfect in everyone’s eyes, but one that does meet the IDF’s needs, with a gradual draft of the charedim,” Edelstein said in an interview with Maariv.

Edelstein said he had no need to explain his intentions to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, adding, “Netanyahu never believed those ‘scare stories’ – that I’m siding with Lapid, Bennett, or Eisenkot. Not even Yair Golan. I respect the Prime Minister’s intelligence, who understands there is no basis to it.”

He also stated unequivocally that he has no plans to leave Likud and join another party.

Asked whether Netanyahu might remove him from his position under pressure from Charedi factions, Edelstein replied, “I don’t think that’s being considered. It’s not a serious move. Such a dismissal would destroy any chance of legislating the law during this term. I don’t rule out political scenarios, but I’m not afraid and I’m not considering changing my positions.”
