As if the political drama in Israel wasn’t already at a boiling point, yet another twist unfolded this morning. Just hours after Prime Minister Netanyahu announced the appointment of Eli Sharvit as the next head of the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security service), the nomination now appears to be unexpectedly revoked.

According to reports, following last night’s announcement, backlash quickly emerged within Netanyahu’s own Likud party. Members expressed discontent upon discovering that Sharvit had recently participated in anti-government protests in Tel Aviv.

The Prime Minister’s Office hinted at the possibility of withdrawing the appointment, though officially attributed the move to an article Sharvit had written criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump. In the opinion article, Sharvit claimed “Trump is pushing the world off a cliff.” Officials suggested the decision to retract the nomination stemmed from concerns that it might provoke anger within the Trump administration.

Sources tell Balaaz that opposition to the nomination wasn’t limited to Netanyahu’s political allies—members of his own family also reportedly questioned his choice of Sharvit for the sensitive role.

Current assessments point to Meir Ben Shabbat as the likely replacement. Ben Shabbat has held various positions within the Shin Bet and previously served as Netanyahu’s National Security Advisor.
