Israir, a competing carrier to El Al, received approval on Monday from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate flights from the United States to Tel Aviv, which challenges El Al’s effective monopoly on the route.

Ever since the Hamas-Israeli war began on Oct. 7, 2023 after the terrorists’ attacks, El Al was the only carrier authorized to schedule flights from the U.S.

In recent months, a few foreign airlines have started some U.S.-to- Israel flights, but not nearly to the extent of El Al’s schedule.

The approval for Israir is temporary as the carrier seeks a permanent operating license from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration.

Israir expects the final approval to fly its Airbus A330 to and from New York and Tel Aviv, by this June.
