Rep. Elise Stefanik announced on Friday that she is suspending her campaign for New York governor and will not seek re-election to Congress, bringing an abrupt end to a political career that has spanned more than a decade in Washington.

In a statement posted to social media, Stefanik said the decision came after serious family deliberation. “While spending precious time with my family…I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Governor and will not seek re-election to Congress. I did not come to this decision lightly for our family,” she wrote.

According to recent polling data, Stefanik, a close Trump confidant, was performing well against incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Stefanik said she was deeply grateful for the broad coalition of support her gubernatorial campaign had received across party lines. “I am truly humbled and grateful for the historic and overwhelming support from Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and Democrats all across the state for our campaign to Save New York,” she said.

Despite that backing, Stefanik explained that remaining in the race was no longer practical. “As we have seen in past elections, while we would have overwhelmingly won this primary, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York,” she wrote.

A central factor in her decision, Stefanik emphasized, was her role as a parent. “And while many know me as Congresswoman, my most important title is Mom,” she said, adding, “I believe that being a parent is life’s greatest gift and greatest responsibility.” She continued that she had reflected deeply and concluded that she would “feel profound regret if I don’t further focus on my young son’s safety, growth, and happiness — particularly at his tender age.”

Stefanik has represented New York’s 21st Congressional District for eleven years. In her announcement, she thanked voters and staff for their support throughout her tenure. “I am incredibly grateful to the people of New York’s 21st District for entrusting me to represent you in the United States Congress,” she wrote. “Thank you to my dedicated staff over the past decade.”

Reflecting on her time in office, Stefanik said she was proud of the work accomplished on behalf of her constituents. “I am proud of the significant results that we successfully delivered for the hardworking families in our district and across America. It has been a tremendous professional honor to serve as your Congresswoman over the past eleven years,” she said.

Stefanik concluded her message by looking ahead, writing, “Thank you for your support and encouragement as my family and I look forward to the next meaningful personal and professional chapter,” she said.

Her announcement immediately reshapes the political landscape in New York, opening both the gubernatorial race and her upstate congressional seat as Republicans and Democrats begin maneuvering for the contests ahead.
