Less than three months after unveiling his “America Party,” Elon Musk has reportedly put the plan on hold, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
According to the Journal, Musk privately told associates he intends to concentrate on his business ventures and does not want to risk drawing voters away from the Republican Party. Sources told the outlet he also feared that launching a new party could strain his ties with Vice President JD Vance, who is viewed as the natural successor to the MAGA movement.
Musk’s allies stressed to the Journal that the idea is not entirely abandoned. They said he could revisit the America Party project as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
The billionaire’s political experiment came shortly after he finished his stint working with the Department of Government Efficiency in the Trump administration. His role ended on May 30, and despite parting with President Donald Trump on seemingly good terms, tensions soon erupted between the two.
Days later, Musk criticized a spending package championed by the Trump White House.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it,” Musk wrote on X, the platform he owns.
From then on, Musk kept up a steady stream of criticism through posts and memes, repeatedly targeting the legislation and accusing the administration of wasteful spending.
On June 5, he polled his followers on whether America needed a new political party. The following day, he declared that “the people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle!”
On July 4, the day Trump signed the bill, Musk posed a similar question.
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” he wrote, adding another poll. This time, the results were narrower: 65.4% said “yes,” compared with the 80.4% who had supported it in June.
The next day, Musk announced, “the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Trump, in turn, lashed out at him on Truth Social.
“I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks,” Trump wrote on July 6. “He even wants to start a third political party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States – The system seems not designed for them.”
But by late July, the feud appeared to cool. Trump shifted his tone, saying he wanted Musk’s businesses to prosper.
“Everyone is stating that I will destroy Elon’s companies by taking away some, if not all, of the large-scale subsidies he receives from the U.S. government. This is not so! I want Elon, and all businesses within our country, to THRIVE, in fact, THRIVE like never before! The better they do, the better the USA does, and that’s good for all of us,” Trump wrote.
