At least eight people were arrested when protestors refused to leave a pro-Hamas encampment at Brooklyn College Thursday evening.
A large contingent of NYPD officers entered the campus after the college called the police to disperse the crowd, who were occupying school grounds without permission. Before entering, police closed Bedford Avenue from Avenue I until Glenwood Road.
Police made loudspeaker announcements urging demonstrators to leave, promising that those who complied would not be arrested but warning that those who refused would be taken into custody. Most of the protestors left after the warning.
Those arrested were charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing. It is not yet known if the suspects are students.
Brooklyn College is part of CUNY, which has faced sharp criticism over its handling of antisemitism before and especially after the Oct. 7 massacre.
After police entered school grounds, tents were removed and most demonstrators left.
Belaaz was told by a source in the NYPD that arrests were expected to occur.
The source said that the protestors were non-violent, though some may have pushed and shoved.
A small group of counterprotestors chanted “Am Yisrael Chai” and other slogans across the street from the encampment.
