Following the announcement of Herzl Halevi’s resignation as IDF Chief of Staff next month, due to the failures surrounding the October 7th attack by Hamas, Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz have revealed the appointment of his successor.
The chosen candidate for the role is Eyal Zamir, currently serving as the Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense. Zamir previously held key positions as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Military Secretary to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
He will assume office, pending an almost certain approval from the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee and cabinet vote, on March 6.
Minister Katz had originally announced a short list of three candidates shortly after the resignation, which included Zamir, Amir Baram and Tamir Yadai, all high-ranking figures in the military.
Zamir’s appointment has garnered broad support across the political spectrum, with praise from former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, Minister Bezalel Smotrich, former Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, and including opposition leader Yair Lapid.

Outgoing IDF Chief of Staff Halevi congratulated Zamir.
“I have known Eyal for many years, and I am sure that he will lead the IDF forward in the face of the expected challenges and wish him great success,” Halevi says in a statement.
“In the coming weeks, we will complete a professional and high-quality handover,” he adds.
