Adi Alexander, father of released hostage Edan Alexander, has shared harrowing details about his son’s experience while held hostage in Gaza. Speaking to The New York Times, he revealed that Edan, a US-Israeli dual citizen, endured physical abuse, was given little food, and faced intense interrogations.

At the beginning of his captivity, Edan was blindfolded with a bag over his head, handcuffed, beaten, and questioned about his role in the Israeli military, which he had only joined about 10 months earlier. “There was nothing to interrogate him about,” his father said. “They knew about the arrangement of the IDF much better than he did.”

According to Adi, Edan was injured when a tunnel collapsed around him, hurting his shoulder. He also suffered severe weight loss from surviving on minimal rations, which included pita bread, rice, beans, and black coffee. “His whole body has bedbug bites,” Adi said. “His skin is in terrible condition.”

Conditions reportedly improved for Edan after the U.S. presidential election brought Donald Trump back to office. Around the time of the January ceasefire, he began receiving better food and was moved to a tunnel with improved living conditions.

Adi noted that the tunnels were originally overcrowded, but space increased over time as hostages were either freed or passed away under the horrific conditions, without medical care. Reflecting on the ordeal, he told the paper, “We never lost hope. I could not allow myself to think any other way.”
