Idaho firefighters came under fire in what officials described as an “ambush-style” shooting Sunday afternoon in Kootenai County.

The firefighters had arrived at Canfield Mountain to respond to a brush fire when multiple personnel were shot. Smoke from the blaze was visible as far as Rathdrum.

Gunfire was reported from multiple directions, indicating that there are several suspects. Officials told NBC that the bullets came from “high-powered” long guns.”I’m hoping that someone has a clear shot and is able to neutralize the threat,” said Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris. As of 8:40pm EST, active shooters are still firing at officers, according to NBC.

Norris has instructed that if “anyone” has a clear shot at the suspects, they should eliminate them.

Northern Lakes Fire Chief Pat Riley confirmed that several firefighters were struck in the incident. He said crews initially responded to a wildland fire, but it quickly escalated into an “ambush-style active shooter” situation. Officials said that 11 people were shot, and two are confirmed to have been killed.

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels announced that his department is deploying air support and additional resources to assist with what he called an “active shooting incident” occurring in North Idaho.

In response, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert advising residents to stay away from the area, which has been sealed off by authorities.

According to KHQ, the fire remains dangerous, and emergency crews have had to retreat due to the unfolding threat.

“This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,” said Governor Brad Little in a statement posted on social media. “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more. Teresa and I are heartbroken. As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
