Federal officials are investigating former FBI Director James Comey after he posted an image on Instagram that may have been a threatening former President Donald Trump’s life, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Thursday.
Comey had posted a photo of a beach shell formation shaped like the number “8647,” which Noem viewed as a coded call to “86” — slang for “get rid of,” the 47th president, Trump. The post has since been deleted.
“Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump,” Noem posted on X. “DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”
The Secret Service, part of DHS, said it is taking the post seriously. “We are aware of the social media posts… and we take rhetoric like this very seriously,” said Anthony Guglielmi, the agency’s communications chief.
White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich said Comey’s post “can clearly be interpreted as a hit” on the president. Donald Trump Jr. added, “Comey is causally calling for my dad to be murdered.”
Comey denied intending any threat, saying he didn’t know the number could be seen as violent. “I didn’t realize some folks associate it with violence… so I took it down,” he said, adding later that he thought the numbers were “a political message.”
Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., demanded Comey’s arrest, while former Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita said a raid on Comey’s home would be justified. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is ready to support the investigation. Rep. Andy Ogles called for a joint probe in a letter to Patel and Secret Service Director Sean Curran.
Trump fired Comey in 2017, four years into his 10-year term. The firing followed the FBI’s probe into Trump campaign contacts with Russia, which had gone public months earlier. The White House said Comey was let go for mishandling the Clinton email investigation.
Trump has survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. One occurred at a Pennsylvania rally where he was grazed by a bullet that killed a supporter. Another was foiled near his Mar-a-Lago property when a rifle-carrying suspect was arrested. That suspect faces multiple federal and state charges and has pleaded not guilty.
Comey has long drawn criticism from both parties — Democrats over his late 2016 announcement about Clinton’s emails, and Republicans over his frequent critiques of Trump. In a 2018 book, Comey called Trump “morally unfit to be president” and compared his leadership to a mafia organization.
