French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will officially recognize a Palestinian state, citing urgent humanitarian concerns in Gaza. He said the decision would be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September, declaring, “The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved.”
While Macron initially stood firmly with Israel after the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, he has since voiced growing frustration over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian situation.
France becomes the most influential European country to take this step. Over 140 nations — including several in Europe — have already recognized Palestinian statehood.
The move comes amid mounting international criticism of Israel. Macron’s government has condemned Israel’s limits on aid into Gaza and the deaths of Palestinians attempting to access food. His foreign minister is set to co-host a U.N. conference promoting a two-state solution.
Macron’s announcement comes a day after the Knesset voted to recognize Israeli sovereignty over Yehudah and Shomron; areas that would make up a future Palestinian state.
The Yesha Council stated: “We demand that the Israeli government respond to the French President’s declaration of recognition of a Palestinian state by applying Israeli sovereignty to Yehudah and Shomrom. The Knesset supported it. Now it’s the government’s turn. The excuses are over. Failure to respond will constitute an existential danger to Israel.”
The Israeli government had no immediate official response, but Israeli officials across the political spectrum have long opposed recognizing a Palestinian state, especially after the October 7 attacks. They argue such recognition rewards Hamas-led terrorism, and that the continuation of terrorism shows that the Palestinian community is not ready for peaceful statehood.
