Edan Alexander, a dual American-Israeli citizen who was recently freed from Hamas captivity, arrived at the White House today accompanied by his family for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
Alexander had been held hostage by Hamas for 584 days before being released on May 12. The terror group described the move as a gesture of goodwill toward Trump.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meeting earlier in the day, saying, “The President and First Lady have met with many released hostages from Gaza, and they greatly look forward to meeting Edan Alexander and his family in the Oval Office tomorrow,” as first reported by Channel 12.
Channel 12 also noted that the meeting is set to take place at noon, with both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump present to greet the 21-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen.
The visit comes just four days before Trump’s scheduled sit-down with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, their third meeting in Washington since January. Earlier this week, Trump said he planned to be “very firm” with Netanyahu about ending the Gaza war.
Edan, who was abducted from his IDF base on the Gaza border on October 7, 2023, was released on May 12 after 584 days in captivity. Originally from Tenafly, New Jersey, Edan returned home last month.
His release was not part of any formal ceasefire or prisoner exchange. Hamas described freeing Alexander as a gesture of goodwill toward Trump, hoping the move might persuade the U.S. to pressure Israel into accepting a broader agreement to halt the war.
Reports on the day of Alexander’s release indicated he might travel to Qatar to meet Trump during the president’s Middle East trip. However, his family explained that due to his medical condition, an immediate overseas trip wasn’t possible.
Instead, Edan spoke with Trump by phone from his hospital bed in Tel Aviv. He was joined by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. “I can’t wait to see you at the White House. The whole nation wants to see you,” Trump told him during the call.
