A French human rights group, the Ligue des droits de l’Homme, has filed a criminal complaint in Paris against Airbnb and Booking.com, accusing the two massive companies of complicity in ‘war crimes’ by advertising vacation rentals in Israeli communities in the Yehudah and Shomron, Channel 12 reported.
The organization claims the platforms promote what it calls “occupation tourism,” arguing that they mislead users and contribute to the growth of Israeli settlements. It alleges that Airbnb lists properties without clarifying that they are in Palestinian territory, while Booking.com marks them as being in Israeli settlements but also describes them as located in “Palestine.”
No such lawsuits have been brought about other contested territories.
The United Nations has previously criticized both companies in this context. In a September 2024 report, the UN included Airbnb and Booking.com among 158 businesses operating in the settlements. Airbnb had initially pledged in 2018 to remove listings in the “West Bank,” but reversed the decision a year later after facing a series of lawsuits.
Experts estimate that short-term rentals in the area generate more than three million euros in annual revenue. Both companies have declined to comment on the latest complaint.
