Nearly ten armed militias are now active across the Gaza Strip, openly challenging Hamas’s rule. Hussam al-Astal, commander of the Khan Yunis militia, gave a rare interview to i24NEWS on Sunday, where he revealed that hundreds of Palestinians are volunteering to join the fight against Hamas. According to him, “the organization is falling apart and we are approaching an imminent decision.”
Al-Astal explained that the militias have created autonomous “green zones,” free from Hamas’s control. He said that within these areas, thousands of residents have already been relocated from Gaza City to the south. Plans are underway to establish schools and hospitals in these compounds, which he described as the foundation of a new future.
He also noted that cooperation is taking place with both the IDF and the Palestinian Authority. After 18 years of Hamas dominance, Al-Astal claimed the barrier of fear among Gazans has finally been broken. “The Gazans understand that the disaster must end,” he said.
Responding to Hamas’s statements the previous night, which alleged that militia fighters had surrendered, Al-Astal dismissed the claims as propaganda. “They are losing their grip on the Strip,” he declared.
