FBI agents arrested Sunday a German-US citizen accused of plotting to bomb the US embassy in Israel.

Joseph Neumayer, 28, was arrested at JFK International Airport. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Neumayer is accused of attempting to firebomb the U.S. Embassy Branch Office in Tel Aviv, Israel.

He is also charged with making threats against former President Donald Trump.

Neumayer traveled to Israel in April. Authorities say he was seen near the U.S. Embassy carrying a dark backpack and allegedly spit on an embassy guard as he passed by.

The guard tried to detain him, but Neumayer escaped, leaving the backpack behind. A search of the bag revealed three Molotov cocktails, according to the DOJ.

Investigators traced Neumayer to his hotel, where Israeli authorities arrested him. Officials also uncovered social media posts in which he allegedly discussed plans to set the embassy on fire.

Other posts from what officials believe is Neumayer’s account included threats to assassinate President Trump, according to the DOJ.

Neumayer was deported to the United States by Israeli authorities on Sunday and was taken into custody by the FBI upon arrival.

“The Department will not tolerate such violence and will prosecute this defendant to the fullest extent of the law,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office is collaborating with its New York Field Office to investigate the case.

“This despicable and violent behavior will not be tolerated at home or abroad, and the FBI, working with our partners, will bring him to face justice for his dangerous actions,” said FBI Director Kash Patel.

If convicted, Neumayer faces a sentence ranging from five to 20 years in prison.
