Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Wednesday endorsed the decision by Berlin authorities to revoke the citizenship of a Palestinian-born man identified only as “Abdallah” who expressed support for the Hamas terror organization shortly after becoming a naturalized citizen, Reuters reported.

“People who have acquired German citizenship, including dual nationals, have declared their commitment to our system of values,” said Dobrindt. “If it becomes apparent that this was a deliberate misrepresentation, and that they do not share this system of values … it should be possible to withdraw citizenship.”

The decision comes amid a broader tightening of immigration and citizenship regulations in Germany, driven by increasing concern over Hamas sympathies among Middle Eastern migrants.

German media reported that the man, who moved to Berlin as a child, posted an image on Instagram just one day after receiving German citizenship. The post depicted two Hamas terrorists with the caption “Heroes of Palestine.” Security services flagged the content, and Berlin’s immigration office determined the man had misrepresented his commitment to German values.

Authorities noted that the man had previously attracted police attention during pro-Palestinian demonstrations, according to reports.

Germany officially banned Hamas and its affiliated organizations following the group’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Under Germany’s revised nationality law, which took effect in June 2024, applicants must explicitly pledge their commitment to the country’s free democratic order and acknowledge Germany’s special responsibility to protect Jewish life.

Immigration officials have now notified the man that his German citizenship is being revoked.
