Germany issued its strongest warning yet to Israel on Tuesday over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, signaling a potential shift in its long-standing support. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concern over the scale of Israeli airstrikes, calling the situation “incomprehensible,” and said he planned to speak with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu soon.
“The massive military strikes by the Israelis in the Gaza Strip no longer reveal any logic to me. How they serve the goal of confronting terror… In this respect, I view this very, very critically,” Merz said during a summit in Turku, Finland.
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also said Berlin would soon consider next steps, stressing that the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly shortages of food and medicine, must be addressed. He clarified, however, that support for Israel’s right to exist and its security remains unwavering.
“Our committed fight against antisemitism and our full support for the right to exist and the security of the State of Israel must not be instrumentalized for the conflict,” Wadephul told WDR.
The IDF has increased operations in Gaza in recent days as part of a renewed push to dismantle Hamas. The IDF has called for civilian evacuations in key southern cities and has allowed some humanitarian aid into the Strip.
