The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israeli-supported aid organization, reported its highest single-day food distribution in the Strip on Wednesday, delivering approximately 2.5 million meals in 34,000 boxes. But while the organization has had logistical success, scenes of chaos and clashes continue to plague its operations.
According to GHF, 45 truckloads of food were delivered through three active sites, two in Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighborhood and one in central Gaza. Each food box is designed to feed 5.5 people for 3.5 days, and the group says distribution on Wednesday “proceeded without incident.”
However, the IDF said its troops fired warning shots at individuals who neared forces in the Netzarim Corridor and were deemed to pose a threat.
“It is also critical that news agencies take care not to confuse the public by reporting on GHF operations in the same breath as Israeli military operations far removed from distribution sites,” GHF said, pushing back on reports that appear to conflate aid delivery with unrelated IDF activity.
Despite Wednesday’s record-breaking numbers, footage filmed just a day earlier underscored the persistent volatility. A video taken June 10, reportedly by an American security contractor, showed a GHF distribution site being completely overrun as Gazans breached the compound’s fencing in a rush to reach food supplies.
This was not an isolated incident. Since GHF launched operations on May 26, its aid delivery model, involving one to three open sites per day, has drawn sharp criticism. The small number of locations, combined with the scale of need across Gaza’s population of roughly two million, has led to chaotic scenes. Israel insists it’s the only way to ensure that Hamas terrorists don’t get their hands on the aid.
The IDF has acknowledged firing warning shots on six separate occasions at individuals who veered off designated access routes.
A GHF spokesperson declined to comment on the latest footage, but the group has said it is modifying its protocols, including introducing dedicated lines for women, in an effort to ease the growing disorder.
To date, GHF says it has distributed roughly 271,200 boxes of food, primarily consisting of dry goods requiring preparation.
