GOP Committee Chairs Launch Probe into Alleged Antisemitism and Russian Influence on Wikipedia

Two GOP-led House committees are demanding information from the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that runs Wikipedia, over concerns that foreign actors are manipulating the online encyclopedia to promote anti-Israel and pro-Russian narratives.

In a letter first obtained by the Washington Examiner, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation, allege that state-sponsored campaigns are underway to influence American public opinion.

The committees are seeking internal records from Wikimedia to investigate the influence of “foreign operations and individuals at academic institutions subsidized by U.S. taxpayer dollars” who allegedly “manipulate” information on the site.

The lawmakers charge that there have been “systematic” operations to “advance antisemitic and anti-Israel information in Wikipedia articles.” Their letter also points to a suspected coordinated effort by a “hostile nation-state actor” to flood the platform with pro-Russian and anti-Western messaging. The probe aims to determine the extent to which these campaigns have successfully altered content on the widely used digital encyclopedia.

To support their inquiry, Comer and Mace cite two studies, including one from the Anti-Defamation League. That report identified a cohort of 30 Wikipedia editors who appeared to act in a coordinated fashion to edit articles related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to the ADL’s findings, the group worked to amplify criticism of Israel while simultaneously downplaying or removing negative information about Palestinian entities. The study outlined the editors’ alleged tactics, noting that “these editors communicated with each other extensively, made multiple edits on the same pages within short time periods, harassed dissenting editors, and voted in conjunction with one another to delete information critical of Palestinians while keeping negative information related to Israelis.”
