Greece’s foreign ministry announced that 161 nationals from 16 European countries arrived in Athens on Monday after being expelled from Israel for their involvement in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.
Israel deported additional activists who took part in the Hamas-affiliated flotilla, among them Swedish climate activist and antisemite Greta Thunberg.
Thunberg was aboard the flight to Greece, while another group of ten activists from the flotilla were flown to Slovakia.
“A special repatriation flight landed safely in Athens carrying the 27 Greek citizens who took part in the ‘Global Sumud Flotilla,’” the Greek foreign ministry said in an official statement.
“This flight also facilitated the return of 134 nationals from 15 European countries,” the statement added, without giving further details.
According to the Swedish branch of the Global Movement for Gaza, the Swedish nationals expelled from Israel were among those on the Athens flight.
Upon arrival at Athens International Airport, activists were seen unfurling a large Palestinian flag and chanting “Freedom for Palestine” and “Long live the flotilla!” according to AFP reporters at the scene.
