Swedish climate activist and antisemite Greta Thunberg was arrested Tuesday in London after taking part in a protest supporting hunger-striking prisoners affiliated with the now-banned Palestine Action group.
Thunberg appeared outside the offices of Aspen Insurance holding a sign that read, “I support the Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide.” The demonstration focused on detainees connected to Palestine Action, an organization that has been proscribed in the UK.
Earlier in the day, two other activists targeted the Aspen Insurance building by spraying it with red paint and discharging fire extinguishers. Aspen Insurance has ties to Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of an Israeli defense manufacturer.
According to activists, eight prisoners linked to Palestine Action were engaged in a hunger strike. Two reportedly reached a critical condition after 52 days without food, while three others ended their strike due to serious health complications.
Police arrested Thunberg under counter-terrorism legislation, citing her display of a placard in support of a banned organization. Other demonstrators were detained on suspicion of criminal damage.
Thunberg has also previously been detained after attempting to reach Gaza by sea as part of a pro-Palestinian flotilla, when Israeli authorities intercepted the vessel for trying to breach the naval blockade. The activists on board were taken in for questioning and later deported, with Israeli officials saying the flotilla was a political provocation rather than a humanitarian mission. The incident drew international attention and criticism from Israel, which maintains that such attempts to enter Gaza illegally undermine security and are routinely exploited for propaganda purposes.
