In response to the recent arrests of yeshiva students, an emergency meeting was held Wednesday evening at the home of Hagaon Harav Dov Lando shlita in Bnei Brak. The gathering brought together askanim from both Israel and abroad.
The purpose of the meeting was to coordinate a unified response across all sectors of the Charedi public. Community representatives discussed how to address the arrests.
A statement from Rav Lando’s residence referenced a warning he had issued last week at a Vaad Hayeshivos conference he chaired. At that event, the Rosh Yeshiva cautioned that if the State of Israel initiates a battle against Torah values, the global Charedi community would rise in full opposition. The statement concluded, “The State of Israel has declared war on the Torah. Charedi Judaism will embark on a global fight like no other.”
According to a report on Kikar HaShabbat, military police appeared at the home of a young avrech’s parents in Haifa last night to carry out an arrest.
Thanks to quick action and, as relatives said, Divine assistance, the 23-year-old kollel avrech managed to evade arrest before being located. “The police knocked and asked where he was,” a family member told the news outlet. “They had clear information about a deserter in the house and came in the middle of the night to arrest him. They didn’t succeed, but they did wake up his new wife, who was quite shaken.”
Military sources informed Kikar HaShabbat that the arrest operation in Haifa was aimed at deserters in general and not specifically Charedim. However, the case drew attention because the target was indeed a Charedi avrech.
